Setting Up an Office in Your Home

When you work from home, setting up your work area and scheduling your time are usually entirely your responsibility. Most work at home companies will hire you as an independent contractor, so you will need to keep track of your expenses for tax purposes. More on taxes in the Tips and Tricks section.

The minimum requirements for most call center work are a computer with a Pentium III processor or higher, high-speed internet access, and a corded phone with a headset. You will also need a good office chair and a keyboard that you are going to be comfortable typing on for long periods of time. I use an ergonomic keyboard, as I have repetitive stress injury to both my hands and the split keyboard is much more comfortable.

If you need to purchase a PC, I recommend Dell . I've never heard of anyone ever having problems with them. Dell Business Affiliates

You can obtain a corded phone with a headset jack, a headset, and a headset adapter at Hello Direct. You really do need a headset, as you need both hands to type and you'll kill your neck of you try tucking the handset between your shoulder and chin. Trust me, you don't want that pain.

You also need a good solid desk to put your computer on, and, because you'll be typing a lot you need to make sure that you have one that is the right height for typing. You'll want to make sure your workspace will be comfortable for you to work at hour after hour, day after day.

You'll need to position your monitor so that it is slightly below eye level, tilted slightly back, and your keyboard so that your forearms are parallel to the ground and your wrists straight and level. I really swear by my natural keyboard. I can type up to 20 wpm faster with it and my hands don't get as tired as they do with a regular straight keyboard.

You might also try Relax The Back Office Chairs and Work Stations. They are the best in the business and well worth every penny.
